INDEX:
Why
YOU Should Work With a Mentor
What do the data say about this? If YOU
want to succeed, you NEED a mentor!
- 75% of executives state that mentoring played a key role in
their career success. (6)
- Mentoring was one of 3 factors for Fortune 500 CEO career
success (10)
- Persons who had a mentor had greater job satisfaction and
found earlier financial success than those who did not have
a mentor. (7) (8)
- The presence or absence of mentoring was more critical in
explaining job satisfaction than was income or gender. (9)
The
Difference Between Mentoring and Coaching
These terms are very popular today, but have been
used in so many different contexts and relationships as to have
become interchangeable, even devalued and meaningless. Here is
what I mean when I use these terms.
1. Coaching is collaborative inquiry into
the technical aspects of any activity, most often of work, as
well as support for development and performance improvement. Of
course, coaching applies to relationships in every setting.
2. Mentoring provides a unique growth-oriented
relationship which is the necessary context for risk taking, deep
sharing, insights, and growth. Mentoring requires commitment and
freely choosing to be held accountable for living out one's intentions.
It also includes coaching, but adds a wide range of strategies
for discovering, supporting, and challenging personal, spiritual,
and/or professional growth
3. BOTH coaching and mentoring must be non evaluative,
positive, and nonjudgmental if the process is to be authentic
and genuine and the results are to be discovery, learning, growth,
and improvement.
Have
You Been Mentored or Coached Before?
Yes, you probably have, although it may be you
didn't consider it "mentoring".
In the sense that mentoring and coaching are an
investment in another person's success, you may have experienced
this kind of empowering support from parents, a pastor, a teacher,
an athletic coach, a friend, perhaps even a boss or your spouse.
Often, people like these care so much about you that they will
go the "extra mile" and do all they can to help you
succeed. We might call this form of support "intuitive"
mentoring or coaching because it is well meaning folks, doing
the best they can, based on common sense and what they feel is
best.
The
Problem With "Intuitive" Mentoring
The problem with "intuitive" mentoring
is that such folks may not have the appropriate mix of professional,
personal, even spiritual preparation and experience to give you
the comprehensive, deep insights and awareness needed for your
maximum growth.
What we usually need for moving along in our journey
is someone we can trust, who understands BOTH the work-specific
and career aspects of your life, AND the personal potential, challenges,
and complexities of life and human development within organizations
and relationships. Barry Sweeny has these skills, knowledge, and
experience.

Testimonials
- What Others Say About Barry's Mentoring of Them
""Thanks
so very much for selflessly giving more than I ever expected!
Your support, guidance, and mentoring of ME was beyond extraordinary!
I finally feel that I know why I am in the role I have, how to
proceed with confidence, and how to make a difference. At a time
when Americans focus on their blessings, I count Barry Sweeny,
as one of my many special blessings!!!
- Robbin Howard, Secondary Schools Peer Mentor,
Brevard Co. Schools, Florida.
"As the mentor coordinator for a brand new mentoring program
with over 700 mentors and proteges, I learned quickly that you may
have only one chance to get it right. Thank goodness I discovered
Barry Sweeny and listened to his advice!
- First, I sought Barry Sweeny's advice as my
mentor for creating in our very first year what I believe is
a very effective mentoring program. Everyone in our organization
is thrilled with the program we created. The time spent learning
from him was the best investment I ever made.
- Second, Barry taught me several great strategies
for evaluating my program and how to use the data to defend
it. He helped me to plan proactively and to see that accountability
is sustainability. Thanks to Barry's wisdom, insight, and advice
the mentoring program has weathered challenges and restructuring
when every other program was cut back. I am so grateful!
- Finally, Barry is an exceptional role model
of what a mentor should strive to be."
- Mary Hasl, Mentor Coordinator, Poudre School
District, Fort Collins, Colorado
"Wow,
Barry! You gave me all that I needed and more! It is like you are
reading my mind. This only goes to prove that you are very experienced
and therefore, very insightful about just exactly what a program
and program leader need. I have grown so much from our work. Thanks
again, for all the input." - Fern Cohen
"I
attended Barry's mentor training in Albuquerque New Mexico, hoping
that, afterwards on my own, I could somehow adapt the information
to my own needs and the company which I lead. I gained
so much more than I expected. The information I received was
absolutely terrific, is better described as "wisdom",
and has been very useful for the applications I had in mind. Also,
Barry volunteered to meet with me after the training to help
me consider how to adapt his models and processes to our business.
He helped me analyze my situation and plan for more than an hour!
So often we see people in the business world pulling others down
instead of helping others learn and develop their skills. Barry
is a wonderful exception!
He quickly got to the heart of my situation with his great
questions and he seemed to already understand the unique issues
we face in our industry. It was amazing to see how easily he did
that. He helped me plan the specific ways I could use what his
training had provided, and he gave me several insights into myself
as well. I will use Barry's valuable information in our
annual Strategic Planning Process where I plan on introducing
a mentorship/development program for our organization. Barry has
really made my life easier.
I strongly recommend Barry to anyone in any setting who needs
to develop a "high impact" mentoring program."
- Barbara Ricci, Operations Manager, IMagic Business Solutions,
Espanola, New Mexico.
"I
cannot thank you enough for your answers to my questions and your
great advice about mentoring. You have given me many ideas that
I want to explore more. I really appreciate your willingness to
share your expert knowledge. As I continue to work in mentoring
I know that I will continue to call on you for your sage advice
and mentoring for ME. Thanks again!" - Jeanna Weldon, Program
Coordinator, Athens, Georgia
