I individually price and negotiate my professional fees rather than use a single figure. The rates I charge vary considerably depending on many factors:

  • the length and number of contiguous days of work
  • the complexity of the assignment
  • location & travel time
  • the amount of research and preparation needed
  • the size of the group
  • the desirability of the assignment to me
  • my prior knowledge and experience with the topic
  • discounts to educational and not-for-profit organizations
  • other factors.

I often DO NOT charge what the "market" considers competitive in that I even consider the specific client when pricing my fees. For example, I choose to work with certain clients who can afford to pay what my services are worth, because this allows me to significantly discount my fees for not-for-profit and community-based agencies, and other organizations with limited resources who cannot pay what my services are worth in the "market".

The following is a possible fee structure to allow potential clients to roughly estimate costs and to see how reasonable my services really are.

- I am a full time private consultant so I can work with you in many ways on a limited or very in-depth and long term basis. In addition to working in areas of my expertise I also try to select consulting opportunities which allow me to learn or expand my experiences and expertise into areas in which I want to learn more. In this latter case, I am willing to price my services at a discount. Let me know what your needs are and we can discuss my costs.

- I do NOT specifically or automatically charge clients for my traveling time. If travel must be done during work hours and requires me to use time during which I could be working with other clients, I will consider the time lost in the pricing. The cost of this time is negotiable and very reasonable since it is necessary to the work but I know it is of little direct value to the client.

- It is my preference to only consult or train for a full day or more, especially if I must travel to your site. Exceptions to this are partial days of work that are adjacent to full days of work, or which pay well enough to compensate me for the time lost in travel. That usually means the client pays for a full day, even when only a part day is required. This is often done in circumstances such as providing a keynote or training for a larger audience (such as 50 +), in which the number of people served makes the time involved in my travel and the cost of my services more cost-effective for the client.

- When I am under contract to present, train or consult, I do NOT also specifically charge clients for my preparation time unless the work is a considerable project which requires research, data collection and analysis, advanced planning, or creation of lots of new materials. In these cases, I will gladly negotiate a "package price" for the project. This is true unless the work is to actually develop materials, in which case I am doing the work in my own office (see "E" below) and I will charge for the time spent at the "office rate".

- MY BASIC FEES FOR CONSULTATIONS, TRAININGS, AND PRESENTATIONS:

 Consulting

Presenting & Training

A - IF within 2 hours driving time of my home:

I request mileage reimbursement at 30 cents a mile. **

Small group of 1-20

 $750/ day **

 $1000/ day **

 Larger group of 21 +

 $1000/ day **

$1500/ day **

B - IF travel to a site exceeds two hours driving time from my home or the site is within the continental US and requires an airline flight:

I request reimbursement at 30 cents a mile for mileage and for parking, etc. **

 Small group of 1-20

 $1000/ day **

$1500/ day **

 Larger group of 21 +

 $1300/ day **

$1800/ day **

C - For work outside of the continental US which requires extensive travel:

Call me at 630-668-2605 to discuss the requirements and negotiate the contract & expenses.

The only added factor here compared to fees stated above is the time & expenses required for travel. **

D - If doing my work involves attending meetings for which I do not provide leadership or facilitation:

 $75 per hour. **

E - For projects on which I can work at my own office:

*$75 per hour for a project taking less than 1 day

*$60 per hour for projects taking 1 to 2 days

* For multi-day or longer projects, I will submit a proposal for the whole project and the costs involved. We can negotiate from that proposal to a final contract that is agreeable to both of us. **

** The client pays my travel and other expenses, which I promise to keep reasonable. For example, I prefer to fly a main air carrier but I always travel coach class. My hotel and eating needs are simple and economical too.

The client provides AV equipment and duplicates all handouts and other materials that I submit in advance.
